Early Orthodontic Treatment for Kids in Mount Pleasant, SC
The American Association of Orthodontists recommends that every child have an orthodontic evaluation by age 7, even if you haven’t noticed any concerns or your child still has many baby teeth. At Mount Pleasant Orthodontics, board-certified orthodontist Dr. Sydney Schneider uses this early window, while the jaws are still growing, to identify developing problems and, when needed, guide growth in the right direction. When it comes to managing certain orthodontic problems, or preventing future issues, the timing of treatment is critical.
When early treatment is recommended, it’s typically shorter in duration and more targeted than full orthodontic treatment. Depending on your child’s needs, it may include a palatal expander to widen the upper jaw, limited braces on select teeth, Invisalign First aligners, or other appliances designed to guide growth or address specific habits.
What Is Phase I (Interceptive) Orthodontic Treatment?
Phase I orthodontic treatment, also called early or interceptive treatment, focuses on correcting certain problems while a child is still growing, before they become more difficult to treat. Not every child needs early treatment, and an orthodontic evaluation does not mean your child will need to start treatment right away.
Benefits of Early Orthodontic Treatment
Early orthodontic treatment takes advantage of a child’s natural growth to address certain problems at the ideal time. By intervening while the jaws are still developing, we can often correct concerns more effectively and prevent them from becoming more complex. Depending on your child’s needs, benefits may include:
- Guiding jaw growth for a healthier bite
- Creating room for permanent teeth to erupt
- Reducing the risk of injury to protruding front teeth
- Lowering the likelihood of needing permanent teeth removed later
- Reducing the need for more extensive treatment in the future
- Supporting more stable, long-lasting results
Common Orthodontic Problems in Children
During your child’s orthodontic evaluation, Dr. Sydney Schneider will check for concerns that may benefit from early treatment, including:
- Crossbites
- Open bites
- Underbites or significant overbites
- Protruding front teeth
- Crowded or misaligned teeth
- Narrow upper jaw
- Impacted permanent teeth
- Early or delayed loss of baby teeth
- Thumb or finger sucking habits
